Survival regression analysis: a powerful tool for evaluating fighting and assessment.

چکیده
Theoretical models of animal contests frequently generate predictions about how asymmetries (e.g. differences in size, residence status) between contestants affect fight duration. Linear regression and nonparametric correlation analyses are commonly used to test the fit of data to such models. We show how survival regression analysis (SRA) is a powerful technique for studying the effect of asymmetries on the duration of contests. SRA, which is under-utilized by students of animal behaviour, offers several advantages over more frequently used procedures. It provides unbiased parameter estimates even when including censored data (i.e. results of contests that have not ended at the time when observations are stopped). The analysis of hazard functions, which is a component of SRA, is an easy way to test for consistency with predictions of the sequential assessment game model. These and other advantages of SRA are illustrated by using SRA and more conventional methods to analyse the effect of asymmetries on contest duration for encounters between female Mediterranean tarantulas, Lycosa tarentula (L.). It is hoped that this example of the advantages of SRA will encourage more widespread use of this powerful technique. Copyright 2000 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.

Evaluating Cost Efficiency in Fuzzy Environment by Using Expected Value
Today, one of the most fundamental issues within the field of industrial and nonindustrial activities is evaluate the costs performance of the units which are associated with industrial and nonindustrial activities. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a nonparametric method for evaluating performance. Fuzzy sets theory is a powerful tool for mentioning ambiguous situations. Traditional DEA model...
متن کاملHabitat Simulation Technique as a Powerful Tool for Instream Flow Needs Assessment and River Ecosystem Management
Instream flow needs (IFN) assessment studies are performed to provide guidelines for stream water management and to assess the impacts of different water projects such as weirs, dams and stream diversions on the available fish habitat. The physical habitat simulation is one of the IFN assessment methods and also a powerful tool in management of river ecosystem that has not become a common metho...

متن کاملA Mathematical Model for Evaluating the Efficiency of the University of Kashan’s Faculties
Efficiency evaluation of units has been of interest since many years in different domains such as management, economy, business, banking, and many others. Data envelopment analysis is one of the popular operations research methods for measuring the relative efficiency of units, which use multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. As we know, universities play a key role in many aspects of a c...
متن کاملEvaluation of growth performance and breeding habits of fighting fish (Betta splendens) under 3 diets and shelters
There are various factors affecting the fighting fish larval survival including nutrition, substrate, water quality, pathogen and stress. Experiments were conducted to study the effect of substrate and live feed on larval survival of fighting fish fry. Nine small glass aquaria (60 cm × 30 cm × 30 cm) were used as breeding tanks. Equal pieces (80 cm2) of rigifoam (T1), polythene (T2) and banana ...
